Volume 33 Number 9

Our Public Enemy #1

Our #1 enemy is Satan.  His main objective is to cause each of us to lose our soul in the burning fires of Hell.  We are warned in 1 Peter 5:8, “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.”  We must constantly watch out for Satan.  He is very dangerous!   Satan is real.  He is not a fictitious character in a red suit, horns, and a tail and carrying a pitchfork.  Satan can appear in many different forms.  Paul says in 2 Corinthians 11:14-15, “For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light.  Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also transform themselves into ministers of righteousness.”  Satan is a master of disguise.  He and his ministers can appear to us so innocently.

Satan’s main weapon is the lie.  Jesus says concerning Satan in John 8:44, “When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of lies.”  Satan knows all of our weaknesses and how to tempt and deceive us.  In Genesis 2:16-17 God told Adam and Eve not to eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil or they would die.  But in Genesis 3:4 Satan told eve, “You shall not surely die.”  Satan only added the word “not” to what God said and changed it into a lie.

Satan will get what is due him. Revelation 20:10 says, “The devil, who deceived them, was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone….and they shall be tormented day and night forever and ever.”  But also notice verse 15, “And anyone not found in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire.”  We must always be prepared in fighting Satan.  In our preparation Paul says in Ephesians 6:11 to “Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the Devil.”  In our fight with Satan we are told in James 4:7-8, “Resist the Devil and he will flee from you.  Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.”  God will help us.

ADULT BIBLE CLASS: We are continuing in our study of the book of John. Thus far we have made it through 17:26. This week we will be discussing our homework: “Why was Jesus struck after he answered the High Priests questions in verses 20 and 21 of the 18th chapter?”  All students are encouraged to continue reading through the 19th chapter this week and answer the question: “Why did Pilate have Jesus scourged if he found no guilt in Him?”

Mission Mexico 2010: The mission trip to Cuidad Victoria is coming quickly. The team will leave from Des Moines on Friday, March 12, and return on Saturday, March 20th. Please let Darin know  this week if you would like to go. The cost this year is $550 per person.  The Ankeny congregation has offered to share space ON their bus to Texas. This will help to keep the team expenses as  low as possible. If you are unable to go but would like to help, we will be in need of the following items: shovels, rakes, concrete tools, post hole diggers, hammers, wire cutters and pliers.  In addition to these items and the $550 per person, we will need to have approximately $3200 for building and travel costs. If anyone would like to go but cannot afford the full cost per person, please see Darin and he will help with other options.

Note from Sandy Longfellow: I found out today that after testing 44 lymph nodes, no further cancer was found. There will be no chemo or radiation treatments necessary! A big thanks to everyone for their wonderful acts of kindness!  —Joe & Sandy Longfellow

There is really no update on Jared Van Egdom’s dad since the last one.  They still want to try to get his blood pressure down before they do a biopsy… unless the tumor or growth or whatever it is, is causing his blood pressure to rise.  Wednesday it was 144/86.  So it’s getting closer.  And they are still waiting on results from tests they did last Thursday.  He has been feeling better the last couple days and has been eating more.  Thanks again for all your concern and thoughts and prayers.

Paul Powers has been moved out of ICU and into room 668 at Mercy hospital. He is going to be moved again soon. Due to his constant improvement, his family has been told to begin looking for a place for him to rehab in Alabama.

Glen Stevens’s health continues to decline. He passed out last week and is having chest pains on a more regular basis. He has an appointment to have an echocardiogram later in March.

Mike Mazak is now a civilian, and has found a job at Dahls grocery store in Ankeny. Many thanks for God’s provision!!

Rosco Imhoff’s sister-in-law Mildred, his brother’s wife, passed away this past Sunday. The funeral was Thursday.  Please keep that family in your prayers.

Amy Penick has seen marked improvement with a change in diet.  Please keep her in your prayers.
Mike Ogle’s dad, Rick, had a successful surgery. They have had him out of the bed and sitting in a chair. He went for a walk today as well.

Prayer request from Diane George: Please include my former mother-in-law, Jessie George, on our prayer list.  She has suffered a stroke and is now experiencing TSI’s.  Thank you in advance.

Brian Hiskey’s friend, Jeff Ward passed away last week. Please remember Jeff’s family in your prayers.

Kelly Potter’s roommate committed suicide last week. Please pray for her family as well Kelly during this time.

Cindy Melvin’s father, Jerry, had a spot removed from his skin and is awaiting the test results. He is doing well but needs our prayers.

Dora Bailey’s mother, Carol Crocker saw the specialist and found out that she has a bulging disk instead of a herniated disc, which will not require surgery, but physical therapy instead.

Andrew Gravew (Harriett’s grandson) is requesting prayers fo the church for his 10-month-old daughter Kayleigha Graves. She’s been diagnosed with severe Acid Reflux, anemia and weight loss.  He would like us to remember himself in prayer, as well.

Jake Ferrell’s mom, Vicki Bennett, is still in Lutheran hospital, and she is doing better.

Lyndsay Gordon asks you to pray for her high school friend, Katie Ford, who had a stroke. She is only 31 years old, and has since had a second stroke.
