Volume 32 Number 43

This week has been one of tests for me. I had to take the driving test for my CDL, I helped my son study for a test at school and there have been several out of the ordinary things that have come up that were a test to my nerves, patience, and communication skills. While tests are never particularly enjoyable (if they were they wouldn’t be called tests), I can say that I have gained much knowledge from the challenges. In Luke 9 we read of a test Christ gave to his apostles…

When Jesus had called the Twelve together, he gave them power and authority to drive out all demons and to cure diseases, and he sent them out to preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick. He told them: “Take nothing for the journey–no staff, no bag, no bread, no money, no extra tunic (Luke 9:1-3).

Basically, Jesus sent them out with just the clothes on their back; however, the question is why? I think Jesus was saying, “I need you to trust me.” While spreading the Gospel, they were also receiving a valuable lesson. Whether it was their clothes and shoes not wearing out or finding a home that welcomed them, God was teaching them, “When you trust Me your faith will be rewarded, and I will provide for your needs.”

I can tell you that prayers were sent up for my tests this week, and what could have been really “sticky” situations were handled in a way that made me wonder why I was worried. Of course, the situations were sticky–they just posed no problem for God. Therefore, my advice to you is not to avoid tests when they are placed before you, instead meet them with God in front of you.

The LORD your God, who is going before you, will fight for you, as he did for you in Egypt, before your very eyes, and in the desert. There you saw how the LORD your God carried you, as a father carries his son, all the way you went until you reached this place (Deut. 1:41).
