Obsessive Compulsive Fish…

Read Heb. 12:1-3 & 2 Thess. 1:3    On a recent trip to the orthodontist, my daughter pointed out the peculiar behavior of one particular fish. The fish would dive down to the bottom of the tank, pick up a mouthful of pebbles, swim under an arched rock, come out the back side, swim to front corner and spit out the rocks, then repeat the process. As a result, that one corner had five inches of pebbles, compared to an inch in the rest of the tank. A quick internet search returned nothing about O.C.D. in fish, but I wouldn’t rule it out. While I have to wonder about the motivation behind it, there is something I admire about the fish.

We ought always to thank God for you, brothers, and rightly so, because your faith is growing more and more, and the love every one of you has for each other is increasing. Therefore, among God’s churches we boast about your perseverance and faith in all the persecutions and trials you are enduring (2 Thessalonians 1:3).

What the fish shows us is perseverance. I expect that fish will continue its task until it dives down to scoop up one more mouthful and comes up empty. Talk about an attitude we need to mirror. Paul wrote the Thessalonians, thanking God for their growing faith and perseverance in trials. Of course, we still face trials today. They come in different forms, some subtle, some blatant, all dangerous. Whether it be an attack of busyness affecting our time in prayer, worship, and assembly, an attack physically, affecting our health, or an attack on our spiritual life, God calls us to persevere and remain faithful, until the day we, “dive down for one more mouthful” and He says, “Well done, good and faithful servant… Come and share your master’s happiness!”(Matt 25:23). Remember too, He does not expect us to do it alone. God promises to remain faithful to us and as a bonus gives us survival tips in His Word…

Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross…Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart (Hebrews 12:2-3).

Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything (James 1:4).

Never thought I’d learn a lesson from a fish
