Contagious Giving
It all started with Christine Martinez’s example. She has been a servant from the fist day she came to be a part of the work at Grandview. I remember the day Christine came to church service and I noticed her beautiful hair, which I had admired for two years, was much shorter. When I asked her why she would even think of cutting her beautiful hair, she smiled real big and reached into her purse. When she pulled out a bag with her cut ponytail inside I couldn’t believe my eyes. “What did you do?” I asked. She replied with that great smile of hers, “I’m going to donate it for cancer patients!” I was so impressed by her sacrifice, and I haven’t stopped thinking about what she gave of herself in such a selfless act and to a stranger! She will never know who will get her ponytail or the story behind their fight with cancer. Christine simply had something that she knew someone else needed and she gave it away.
This kind of “giving” seems to have become contagious. Have you noticed more and more girls with new short haircuts? I am not sure in what order they came in, but since Christine quietly gave away her hair, some of our young girls have followed in her steps.
Hannah Johnson, Elizabeth Johnson, and Hope Walker have all gone and had their beautiful ponytails cut and put into a bag and then mailed in so that wigs can be made for cancer patients. Now, on Saturday April Mazak has an appointment to give some of her beautiful hair to the cause. Word has it that Kristen Walker and Tava Mazak are growing their hair as fast as they can because they want to be next in line to give theirs away too.
I am so proud of each of these girls. I am thankful to Christine for her example to us of what selfless sacrifice is. It has made me want to be like them and give some of my hair away too. Sadly for me however, hair with gray is not accepted.
We have many in our congregation who have suffered cancer and who are still in the fight of their lives. We have all wished we could help Karen Hardy and Karen Carico. I am so proud of our young girls who found a way to help. By giving of themselves they will make a difference in someone’s life.
I can see Jesus working in each of these girl’s lives. He is developing servants for Him. And I am thankful for their example to me.
We truly can all play a part in the work of the Lord. We truly can all find a way to serve him and each other, no matter how old, and no matter what our resources are.
Giving can be contagious!

News & Notes
Ladies’ Fellowship will be this Tuesday, January 16th at the Augspurger’s house at 7:00 pm. The topic will be, “New Beginnings”.
It’s Blood Drive Time!
This year, the Blood Center of Iowa will need to see 2100 donors per week to keep up with the demand for blood in the 49 Iowa hospitals they serve. One February 24, you have a chance to be one of those donors!
Everyone who weighs at least 120 pounds and is over the age of 16 is eligible to give blood. (If you are 16-18 and this is your first time to donate to the Blood Center of Iowa, you must have parental consent.) To learn more whether travel or medication issues would allow you to donate, visit www.bloodcenterofiowa.org.
Donating blood is not the only thing you can do at a blood drive – many people are needed to make the event a success. Opportunities to serve include calling for appointment reminders, baking cookies, unloading equipment (nothing over 30 pounds), working at the canteen, and loading equipment at the end of the event. (The loaders at the end need to be people that have not given blood and who want to eat all leftover cookies.) Sign-up sheets are on the bulletin board!
The Grandview goal is to bring in 36 donors from 8-11 a.m. on Saturday, February 24. Please sign-up for an appointment time and we will see you at the drive!!
We will sing at Karen Acres on Sunday, January 21 at 2:00 pm. Please join your voices with ours to glorify our Lord before these precious people.
Central Iowa Missions: This week, Art Wallis will speak in the morning, and Mike Dorrell will speak in the evening. Darin Thompson will speak at Blockton in the morning. Next week, Mike Melvin will speak in the morning, and Ron Melvin will speak in the evening.
